Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an empirically supported treatment that focuses on increasing positive activities through SMART goals, and by assisting people to become more aware of their “faulty thinking styles”.  For example, a person who is depressed may have the belief, “I’m worthless,” and a person with a phobia may have the belief, “I am in danger.” While the person in distress likely holds such beliefs with great conviction, with a therapist’s help, the individual is encouraged to monitor, and log their automatic thoughts in order to enable them to identify their thought patterns.  These biases in thinking are gradually replaced with more realistic thoughts.  As the person is able to use more realistic thoughts, they notice positive improvements in their mood, which typically would result in a reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety.  Clients who seek CBT can expect their therapist to be active, problem-focused, and goal-directed.

EMDR

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that was developed to resolve symptoms resulting from disturbing and unresolved life experiences. It uses a structured approach to address past, present, and future aspects of disturbing memories. The approach was developed by Francine Shapiro to resolve the development of trauma-related disorders as resulting from exposure to a traumatic or distressing event, such as sexual assault, trauma, or military combat.

Grief therapy may include a variety of therapeutic strategies, such as talk therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, process letters, EMDR and other healing strategies dependent on the kind of loss, response to the loss and the duration of the suffering.
